    Dipeptidyl Peptidase 10 (DPP10789): A Voltage Gated Potassium Channel Associated Protein Is Abnormally Expressed in Alzheimer’s and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.The neuropathological features associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) include the presence of extracellular amyloid- peptidecontaining plaques and intracellular tau positive neurofibrillary tangles and the loss of synapses and neurons in defined regions of the brain. Dipeptidyl peptidase 10 (DPP10) is a protein that facilitates Kv4 channel surface expression and neuronal excitability. This study aims to explore DPP10789 protein distribution in human brains and its contribution to the neurofibrillary pathology of AD and other tauopathies. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed predominant neuronal staining of DPP10789 in control brains, and the CA1 region of the hippocampus contained strong reactivity in the distal dendrites of the pyramidal cells. In AD brains, robust DPP10789 reactivity was detected in neurofibrillary tangles and plaque-associated dystrophic neurites, most of which colocalized with the doubly phosphorylated Ser-202/Thr-205 tau epitope. DPP10789 positive neurofibrillary tangles and plaque-associated dystrophic neurites also appeared in other neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration, diffuse Lewy body disease, and progressive supranuclear palsy. Occasional DPP10789 positive neurofibrillary tangles and neurites were seen in some aged control brains.Western blot analysis showed both full length and truncatedDPP10789 fragments with the later increasing significantly in AD brains compared to control brains. Our results suggest that DPP10789 is involved in the pathology of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases

    Preserving Heritage in the Face of Urban Development in Hong Kong

    With some of the original Hong Kong heritage fading away, it is important to discover the roots of the issue in order to address it. We determined the original Chinese settlement area in Sheung Wan to be most vulnerable to socioeconomic change and identified critical aspects of their heritage to preserve. We also discerned which of the changes in the area were beneficial or detrimental to the heritage preservation. This work is imperative to help tackle the gentrification within the area before it transforms into cosmopolitan and westernized at the expense of traditional heritage. This project allowed us to make recommendations regarding how to address the changes in our area. The life of the city will be strengthened by preserving heritage and highlighting its importance to the people

    Diffusing Workers in a Multiplex World

    The study of labor mobility across firms is crucial to understand economic performance, unemployment, skills reallocation and other aspects that shape the economic life of nations. Modeling labor flows between firms has been a challenge due to the complexity arising from the distributed and heterogeneous nature of labor flows. In this paper, we introduce a discrete-time model of labor flowing on a multi-layered network (i.e. a multiplex graph). By introducing multiple layers, the model accounts for different mobility patters (e.g. industries, geographies, occupations, etc.), which is important to understand the reallocation of human capital, skills and knowledge. We apply the model to UK empirical micro-data and find that our measure of regional preferences for low versus high skilled workers vary significantly from a single to a multi-layer representation of the world

    Evaluación de la capacidad de carga turística y la producción de residuos sólidos en las Lomas de Primavera, Carabayllo - Lima, 2015

    El presente estudio evaluó la capacidad de carga turística actual y potencial del sendero en las Lomas de Primavera – Carabayllo, así como la generación de residuos sólidos por parte de los visitantes a las Lomas de Primavera en el distrito de Carabayllo para el presente año, a través de visitas a campo a fin de medir y posteriormente determinarlos. Para el desarrollo del presente trabajo de investigación se utilizó la metodología de observación, a fin de obtener los datos en campo, aplicando una observación no participante. Los materiales que se utilizaron fueron un GPS para tomar las coordenadas de los puntos en el sendero, un teodolito, una wincha métrica, una balanza y los instrumentos validados. Para la determinación de la capacidad de carga turística y la generación de residuos sólidos, fueron realizadas a través de la fórmula de Cifuentes y la metodología de la guía de estudio de caracterización propuesta por el MINAM. Teniendo como resultados que en el presente año la capacidad de carga turística es de 120 visitantes/día. Además, la generación per cápita de residuos sólidos producidos por los visitantes es de 0.32 kg/persona/día en Lomas de Primavera – Carabayllo

    "Someone's got my back" : older people's experience of the Coaching for Healthy Ageing Program for promoting physical activity and preventing falls

    The Coaching for Healthy Ageing trial evaluated the impact on physical activity (PA) and falls based on a year-long intervention in which participants aged 60+ receive a home visit, regular health coaching by physiotherapists, and a free activity monitor. This interview study describes the participants’ experiences of the intervention and ideas for improvement. The authors sampled purposively for maximum variation in experiences. The data were analyzed thematically by two researchers. Most of the 32 participants reported that the intervention increased PA levels, embedded activities, and generated positivity about PA. They were motivated by quantified PA feedback, self-directed goals, and person-centered coaching. Social connectivity motivated some, but the intervention did not support this well. The intervention structure allowed participants to trial and embed activities. Autonomy and relatedness were emphasized and should be included in future program theory. The authors identified synergistic effects, likely “essential ingredients,” and potential areas for improving this and similar interventions

    A sociotechnical systems approach toward tailored design for personal health information management

    We used a sociotechnical systems approach—which conceptualizes a system of interacting people, technologies, and tasks, to identify individual differences in personal health information management (PHIM) that can inform the design of patient-friendly environments, tools, and technologies. We conducted a secondary thematic analysis of data collected as part of a parent project, vizHOME. The goal of vizHOME was to improve health and health outcomes through identifying key features in the environment that will inform the design of consumer health information technology HIT. We analyzed interview data collected from 20 individuals with diabetes. We found seven dimensions of PHIM: (1) level of privacy preferred for PHIM; (2) amount of engagement in PHIM; (3) extent of guidance preferred for PHIM; (4) level of documentation preferred for PHIM; (5) degree of physical distribution of PHIM; (6) amount of flexibility in PHIM routine; and (7) use of external cues to manage PHIM. Our results suggest that each dimension exists as a continuum, which are anchored from low to high. Exploring the interaction between PHIM and the sociotechnical system in which PHIM is performed revealed key dimensions of PHIM as well as individual differences in those PHIM dimensions. Identification of individual differences in PHIM can support the creation of human-centered design considerations for tailored environments, products, processes, and technologies that support PHIM. Future research will seek to validate PHIM dimensions in a larger population and develop a PHIM-typing measure to identify PHIM types toward tailoring processes, products, and to individual needs in context. Altering the thermal decomposition conditions can shift the nanoparticle product from spherical, thermodynamically-driven NPs to unusual, kinetically-controlled octapod structures.     Lifestyle Behavior Change in Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease:A Qualitative Study of Clinical Practice

    Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver condition worldwide and is linked largely to obesity and inactivity. Lifestyle modification is the primary treatment for NAFLD targeting dietary change, physical activity, and exercise to facilitate weight loss and weight loss maintenance. This has been shown to reduce steatosis and ameliorate steatohepatitis. European Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of NAFLD highlight the importance of targeting lifestyle behavior change in all patients with NAFLD regardless of disease severity. These guidelines recommend combining dietary restriction and a progressive increase in aerobic exercise and resistance training with a focus on tailoring interventions to the individual patient. Practice guidelines published by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases recommend weight loss of at least 3% to 5% of body weight via hypocaloric diet or diet combined with increased physical activity but state that these lifestyle interventions should target patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Given the benefits of lifestyle behavior change, this study explored the perceptions surrounding clinical care as currently offered to patients with NAFLD. The aim of this study was to establish whether current provision of lifestyle behavior change support is sufficient, whether health care professionals believe they have the tools to target lifestyle behavior changes effectively, and how targeting diet and physical activity/exercise to facilitate weight loss and weight loss maintenance in practice can be improved from the perspective of health care professionals and patients
